What's so special about 3rd through 8th grades?

"Just read anything" is not enough

Do you tell a child to just keep playing the piano and expect him/her to grow to be a concert pianist?  Then why do you expect your child to master English Language Arts* just by encouraging him/her to read?

Unfortunately,
just read anything is the typical answer given by many school teachers when asked about what a child can do to improve his/her English skills.

*English Language Arts, or ELA, encompasses language skills beyond conversational and writing abilities, and includes reading, spelling, grammar, literature, composition and speech that aim to develop students' proficiency, comprehension and capacity for use of written and oral language in English.

It’s no wonder why so many college bound students are ill prepared to meet college readiness levels in English.  This can be especially challenging as more universities take a “holistic view” of an applicant, placing more weight on essay(s) to give insight and perspective they would not see otherwise.
