Course Descriptions

ELA Exploration Classes (3rd to 9th grades)

Instruction: 50 min/week
Homework: approx 60 min/week

These classes utilize passages from different genres to understand and practice the purposes of writing.  Students will read and examine factual and literary text from diverse topics and writing styles.  Each week, students will be exposed one of the five main genres of writing: expository, descriptive, persuasive, narrative, and journal or letter writing.

Preparation work is expected of students before class to maximize instruction and learning time. Additional practice and review work is assigned to students to reinforce learning from class.

Classes will also focus on:

  • a reading passage demonstrating one of the writing genres

  • writing practice and strategies

  • grammar instruction

  • vocabulary development

  • communication skills

  • presentation skills

Book Exploration Classes

Instruction: 50 min/week
Homework: approx 60 min/week

This course is similar to our ELA Exploration Class, but instead of studying different types of passages each week, students start and finish a book selected by the instructor using a reading plan over a number of weeks to explore and analyze different aspects of the story including character development, plot study, cause and effect, and theme(s) derived from it.

There will be weekly fluency-building reading, discussion, focus on vocabulary and reading response writings to dive deeper as we practice literary analysis.

This course aims to promote an appreciation for literature, strengthen critical engagement with literature, prepare students for high level reading and analysis, and provide practice for speaking analytically about literature with others.

Some sample stories are: Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, The Giver, Holes, From the Mixed Up Flies of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, Hatchet, etc.

SAT/ACT Test Prep Class

Instruction: 50-60 min/meeting
Homework: approx. 60-90 min/session

This course is designed to help students build confidence and improve performance on the SAT or ACT through focused instruction, guided practice, and strategy coaching. Students will:

  • Learn and apply test-taking strategies for reading, writing, and math sections

  • Practice pacing, question analysis, and elimination techniques

  • Complete targeted skill reviews to reinforce foundational concepts

  • Work with real test questions and take practice sections

  • Track progress and set goals with instructor support

Instruction is tailored to the test version each student is preparing for (SAT or ACT), and students will receive individualized feedback and support in small group or one-on-one formats. This course empowers students to approach test day with clarity, skill, and confidence.

College Essay Prep Class

Instruction: 50-60 min/meeting
Homework: approx 60-90 min/session

This class guides students through the process of crafting compelling, authentic personal essays for college applications, summer programs, and internships. With step-by-step support, students will:

  • Explore prompts and brainstorm meaningful, original content

  • Learn techniques for personal storytelling and narrative structure

  • Draft, revise, and polish essays with targeted feedback

  • Strengthen clarity, voice, and impact in writing

  • Understand what admissions readers look for in standout essays

Each student receives individualized guidance throughout the process to ensure their writing reflects their unique voice, experiences, and aspirations. By the end of the course, students will have a completed personal statement or application essay and tools to approach future writing with confidence.

High School AP Prep Classes

Instruction: 50-60 min/meeting
Homework: approx 60-90 min/session

These classes are designed to support students enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) courses with the content mastery and exam strategies needed for success. Each course aligns with College Board standards and helps students:

  • Practice with multiple-choice questions and free-response prompts

  • Develop test-taking strategies specific to the AP exam format

  • Receive individualized feedback to strengthen performance

Whether students need ongoing support throughout the school year or intensive review ahead of the exam, these classes help them feel confident and prepared for their exams.

1-on-1 Tutoring / Study Skills (any grade level)

Typically 1 hr/week

Tailoring the Advela Method and the Advela Way to the area of focus for your student, this learning option is for those who would like tutoring in specific subject area(s) and needs, not only in English, but also in other subjects including history, math and science. Additional areas of focus can include study skills, organizational management, and executive functioning coaching. This is a nurturing space to reinforce content and concepts, tackle areas to strengthen, build confidence and develop a love of learning.

Academic Life Coaching (middle school and up)

Typically 1 hr/bi-weekly or as needed

Academics play a big role in a student’s life but that is not the only factor that contributes to a student’s well-being.  Students face pressure from many areas of life including: school, friends, peers, parents, extracurricular activities, and other sources.  Increase self-awareness, motivation and problem solving skills to develop new patterns to cope, increase confidence and inner strength, and advocate for one-self.  Learn how strengths can support areas needing growth.  Develop lasting skills that will propel your student through life with improved self-esteem, confidence and skill.

Typically, high achieving high school students juggling multiple priorities find these sessions extremely helpful to find systems to manage their time, set goals and work towards them, learn about their passions, and discover more about themselves to make informed decisions that can impact their future plans.
