Advela:
An Advanced English Academy for 3rd through 8th graders

Why 3rd through 8th grade?

K-2: Build foundational language tools

In early primary grades from kindergarten through 2nd grade, students’ learning comprises of building foundational tools such as the alphabet, phonemic awareness, spelling, grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary and other basics of the English language.  Students learn by imitating through models, examples, and repetition as they form the structures that become the foundation for future learning.

3-8: Learn and practice tools to stretch their brain muscle

Starting in 3rd grade, as their cognitive maturity starts to take shape, it is critical that students shift their learning more heavily on using these foundational skills to:

  1. understand and interpret written texts,

  2. analyze text and think critically to make sense of information, and

  3. form their own opinion and articulate and support their viewpoints.

These important formative years lay the foundation for critical thinking, problem-solving, and logical deduction that will carry through their academic and professional careers.

Unfortunately, many students do not often get enough of the support needed to develop and hone these skills at school or at home.  We at Advela Academy have identified this critical yet often overlooked gap and developed a systematic and effective method to provide 3rd through 8th grade students the necessary training and practice to sharpen these important skills.

9-12+: Apply critical learning skills to excel in other academic areas and career

As students transition into their teenage and adult years, they should be ready to apply these skills to all facets of their studies and life.  We have seen the benefits of critical reading and writing skills transfer to academic performances in AP classes, SAT and ACT testing, college preparations, but also into leadership, involvement in sports teams, debate, presentations, interview skills, jobs, and relationships.  Advela Academy offers ELA courses through 8th grade because once a student enters high school, attention is better served at the individual level as each student has different strengths and weaknesses, as well as different goals and aspirations.  We offer one on one tutoring and academic life coaching to high school students providing tailored help to maximize their potential.

Who We Are

We are successful educators and professionals who have been working with young children for over 20 years.  We have a track record of working with students who have gone onto attend some of the most prestigious universities in the country, including Brown, Cornell, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and the US Military Academies.  Our non-education industry experiences afford us unique perspective on what makes a person successful, not just in academics, but in professional settings as well.

But first and foremost, we are parents who have a passion for raising intelligent and confident children.  Each of us have gone through—and still continue to go through—the ups and downs of struggles and triumphs of parenthood; and through personal and professional experiences, we have developed an effective teaching method to tap into and grow a child’s potential.

Why We are Passionate About This

Over the years of working with high performing and motivated high school students, we have encountered a similar unfortunate pattern:

Studies show, despite fluency in English, students struggle with many aspects of ELA once they reach advanced courses (not just English courses), in high school and college.

We realized a root cause lays with holes and gaps in our education system that can start in primary education.  In schools today, listening, reading and formulaic writing tend to be the focus but are not covered in the depth and breadth needed to lay foundational skills to think, analyze, write and speak critically.

With this backdrop, we have created courses for students to sharpen and hone their fluency of English Language Arts starting from a young age.  We have no doubt strong foundational skills in ELA will set the tone for students to thrive once they get to advanced English courses in high school which will extend well into and beyond their college years as they interact and communicate effectively with professors, peers and professionals in the world.
